Highlights from December 1-9

Here's the BEST of my last week . . .

Friday, Dec 1 – Turned in all finals for school. I received an A for the Pastoral Understanding of Women class. I loved that class, the classmates and teacher. I haven’t heard about my grade for the Discovering Your Ministry Potential class. However, it’s a pass/fail and I’m sure I passed.
Saturday – Helped set-up for and played at the Secret Sister party. What a blast! Legal stealing, legal food (no calories you know), and lots of laughter. 38 women joined us that night. Lovely food – we need some of those recipes for the next cookbook.
Sunday – The nieces and I wrote, produced and performed a lovely show for the “rents return. I played Go Tell it on the Mountain on the piano (right hand only) and was accompanied by S who sang and K who played her violin. I’ve always wanted to do something like that! We plan on having another show at Christmas. This time I hope to play a song with both hands.
Monday – Watched Akeelah and the Bee. Very motivational. Good acting. If you haven’t seen this –DO! Thanks to CR for letting me borrow the DVD.
Tuesday – Saw The Polar Express at the Imax with three from church. Not just anyone could get in that night! Channel 10 sponsored a coat drive. The admission was a child’s coat. Thanks JH for letting me know about this. The 3-D movie was truly magical on that big screen. Can you hear the bells ring?
Wednesday - Drove around looking at Christmas lights with my sista’s familia. So far the best lights are on Agena off Huntsman in Rosemont. Practically the whole court is lit up. Thanks again to JH for this info. Anyone know of a must-see house or street?
Thursday – Dinner and an Advent worship time with the dear I family. Dinner was a sausage casserole topped with croutons. Crunchy tastiness. I loved hearing M and S read and explain how prophecy is a part of our Advent preparation. Their focus wasn’t just on learning. It is about preparing our hearts for Christ.

CNC's mommies group debuted today. I was able to spend some time with these lovely ladies and their lovely babies. It is a support group for mom's with nursery age children. It was sooo precious to see them crawling, talking, and sleeping. The babies not the mommies. If you want inforamtion, call me, the office, or RW.

Friday – Found some winter clothes, lost more weight, and spent a NICE evening with my sista. We are involved in a project that will impact me and you, the readers. BUT, I’m not telling now!!

Oh yes – I also had the privilege of attending K and S’s award ceremony at school. Both received awards – ‘Natch! (I hope that didn’t come off as too braggish.)

Saturday – Christmas tree chopping is slated for this afternoon. It’s a bit drizzly so we’ll have to see if that’s still a go.

Easiest Weight Loss Tip EVER . . .

Drink water!

Yep, that’s it. About 10-12 cups a day.

I mentioned here that I’ve lost 15 pounds without trying. Drinking more water is how.

I have not (consciously) been doing anything else differently. In fact, I wasn’t drinking more water to lose weight. I started because it was an easy health action I could implement. One Sunday I put on my dress shoes and they were loose! That’s the first place I noticed the weight loss.

I have not noticed increased skin moisture, memory or energy. I’ve heard that the last two are also side-benefits of drinking adequate amounts of water.

There are increased bathroom trips. Read below to find out why.

As you continue to give your body all the water it could ask for, it gets rid of what it doesn't need. It gets rid of the water it was holding onto in your ankles and your hips and thighs, maybe even around your belly. . . Your body figures it doesn't need to save these stores anymore; it's trusting that the water will keep coming, and if it does, eventually, the flushing (of both the body and the potty) will cease, allowing the human to return to a normal life.

“But it’s so yucky to drink that much water,” you say. I used to say that too. I helped myself by drinking it hot, in a class with ice cubes, sipping it through a straw and by adding lemon or lime slices or squirts from concentrate. Now, I actually LIKE drinking that much water. (I used to drink maybe 3 cups daily.)

The Nativity Filled Our Time and Minds

Sunday’s To-do List included:

X Worship at Church

X Go to Dollar store to buy gifts for party
X Go to movies to see The Nativity

Going to the movies was a way to fill time until the party. And it was a fun way to fill our minds with the Christmas Story.

Things I liked about the movie:

The actors did not have white skin, blue eyes, and an American accent.
The scenery (for lack of a better word) was great. I liked seeing how the dress, buildings, landscape, and jobs (olive crushing, harvesting, shepherding) might have been done during Biblical times.
It showed how it was a dangerous time. The people were captives to the Romans and Herod. There was great tension. It was obvious that the people needed a Rescuer, a Saviour.
Some struggles Mary, Joseph and her parents have are revealed. I.e. It was a very courageous thing for Mary to say to the Angel, "I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May it be to me as you have said." Then the angel left her. Saying "yes" to God meant hardship for herself and her family.
It was mostly faithful to the Biblical account. Some of the timing of the events seemed out-of-order, but this did not hinder the enjoyment or effectiveness of the movie.

Other comments:

About ¾’s of the way through my nieces (5, 9,10) started to fidget. This is not a high action movie. I haven’t asked them yet if they thought it was too long.
It has illusions to violence and real life pain. Like when . . . A daughter is forcibly taken by soldiers as payment for taxes . . . Herod’s soldiers kill the babies 2 and under . . . Rebels are punished and seen crucified . . . Elizabeth and Mary have their babies. There is a lot of screaming but no blood and gore. . . Mary, her family and Joseph are ostracized by their village because of Mary’s untimely pregnancy . . . John the Baptist is circumcised (as a baby).

The movie does not dwell on these things, but it is good to know about in case you want to have follow-up talks with your kiddos.

I LOVED Joseph. His character was the most developed one in the movie. His care for Mary is evident from the beginning and is so touching. He also displays great courage in taking Mary as a wife and taking the two of them on that 100 mile trek to Bethlehem. I had no idea it was so difficult.

This movie does provide plenty of subjects to talk about with your children. Especially the courageousness Mary and Joseph displayed when following God’s will. The older two nieces were grossed out that a teenage Mary (like around BW’s age) would have to marry someone so old (like around my son’s age).

I also LOVED that the audience clapped at the conclusion. Christ’s entrance into the world certainly does deserve clapping. How Mary and Joseph responded to God's will deserve clapping. Isn’t that a fitting way to end a movie about Christ?

Man Cannot Live On Chocolate Alone; But Woman Sure Can

I've been experimenting on chocolate pies. "Yumm-O."

I donated one pie to last week's youth pie sale. And I took two pies to our Thanksgiving feast today.

Here's my current recipe. It's a combination of several recipes.

It takes about 5 minutes to put together.

Ingredients:

1- 8 oz bar of Hershey's dark chocolate - broken into small pieces
16 large marshmallows
1 cup whipping cream
1 graham cracker crust

Directions:

Put the following ingredients into a microwave safe bowl: broken chocolate, marshmallows, and 1/3 cup cream.
Microwave until melted. Stir every (one) minute.
Whip up 3/4 of the whipping cream until fluffy.
Fold the whipped cream into the cooked (still warm) chocolate mixture. Stir until thoroughly mixed.
Pour into graham cracker crust. Refrigerate. Let set for at least 30 minutes.

I'm not sure what would happen if you didn't whip the cream before hand. One of these days I'll make it without doing that step. I'll let you know the results.

4 Things I'm Pondering While the Goliaths Outnumber Me

How does God interact with His children during extreme crisis?

How would God like His children to interact with Him during crisis?

Week 9, in the Believing God study by Beth Moore, sets the stage to answer these questions.

Are you in a place where God is saying to you, "I want everything you've got. I am going to require every ounce of you on this one?"

I'm in that place. And I've been pondering four things from this lesson:

God is bigger than any "title" I have to face. His power trumps. Believe it! It may be a matter of time before I see that power, but it is just as inevitable as the setting sun. BUT even when God does stop the setting sun, "He works out all the consequences."

The Goliaths in my life are not polite or fair. Ever been in the battle where you are fighting so many Goliaths that you don't know which one to fight first? That's me right now.

"For children of God, a perfect setup for catastrophic DEFEAT is also the perfect setup for MIRACULOUS victory."

That is glorious. That is inspiring. That is our God. There is no God like Jehovah.

Sometimes I am "idiot girl." When I get myself into a mess, God does not say, "you got yourself into it, now get yourself out of it."

Yes, I'll likely have to pay consequences. I might get grace and not get what I deserve.

"But always my chastisement [the consequences I pay] will never be for the sake of punishment. He only chastises to the degree I am taught. God is always for me even when I am my own worst enemy. God is NOT like man."

God is pleased when I think well enough of Him to ask BIG things.

"Show me Your glory, God." Moses begs. Forget a bank; he wants to see Fort Knox. He needs a walk in the vault of God's wealth. Would you stun me with Your strength? Numb me with Your wisdom? Steal my breath away with a brush of Yours? A moment in the spray of the cataract of grace, a glimpse of Your glory, God. This is the prayer of Moses."

Sista Frugally Saves $149.00

Last week Sista went for an eye check.

That’s important to do once you reach a certain (adult) age and there’s a family history of glaucoma. Plus she was having a little trouble finding the correct place to put her book in order to read.

Doctor’s report: Her eyes are fine except for needing reading glasses. The doctor said she could go and get $150.00 pair of glasses from their office . . .

OR . . . go to Longs and get a pair of reading glasses for under $10.00.

When Sista explained her new eye situation to her oldest dd, K, she had an idea.
“Mom, why don’t you go to The Dollar Store and get a pair for a dollar!”

So that’s just what sista did. And she splurged – bought TWO pairs. One to keep in her purse and one by the computer.

So really Sista saved $298.00.

And she topped any of my money saving ideas.

30 Things To Be Thankful For

Following the example of Lynette and at the prompting of Duker,

Here's my list in no particular order:

My children - they are healthy and moving on with their lives as responsible adults
My nieces and the opportunity to spend time with them
That I got to attend seminary this semester and did not have to take out a loan for it
The Believing God study I am doing is directing me into well, believing God more
Internet access and the way it allows me to keep in touch with others, like Duker, at a time in life when face-to-face meetings aren't often possible.
Mark and Jenny have been a great emotional, spiritual, and intellectual support to me
OF COURSE the CNC family. I told the staff awhile back that even if I wasn't on staff, I'd still go here!
God's never-ending patience with and endless love for me
The women's ministry team - I appreciate their servant hearts, humble feet, and blessed mouths
Roberta! She does so much to "make me look good" and feel good too.
Prayer - wow - it really is a link to the heavenlies
Books - If you are a book lover, you know what I mean. If not, I can't explain it.
The freedom to worship and minister freely as a woman
My car - I am grateful that it is dependable
Fixed-up study area
The angels who surround and protect me each night
Bryce and his team - they are greatly impacting the youth. I want this godly remnant because they will be in power when I'm feeble
Healing is still going on today!
The Bible - When I let it, it instructs, encourages and matures me. And of great importance - grows my faith.
That I am not in charge.
Chip, my 14 year old doggie brings me continued laughter, "conversation," and comfort.
Fresh, clean water
That this life with its joys and troubles is "just a moment" in the span of Eternity with GOD
For people who are surrounding me in prayer, faith and friendship
Fog that I can take a walk in
Puffy paint - I REALLY like to use it
A house and home to call my own
Fenced in side-porch
That God has a "job" just for me to do and the gifts and the power to accomplish that
Music - especially music that moves me to remember just how mighty God is and worthy of praise

Nightmare as Teaching Tool

I hate nightmares.

The whole someone chasing after you, heart in your throat, oh no, I'm dead kinda thing if I get caught. That's how I woke up this morning.

BUT just before I opened my eyes, I saw and heard Sandra's voice quoting I John 4:4.

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

I need that kind of assurance every now and then. Especially when I get to focusing on the physical aspects of life.

I need to know that God is greater than:

my fears.
the circumstances I get dragged into.
the evil of men.
my incompetencies.
Satan's schemes.
my past.

Reading these I John "overcome" passages I see that I am an overcome-er because:

I have been born of God. At 16 I asked Jesus to become my Saviour. I can trust Him with my eternity and my today.
I live in faith. It is a growing thing. The Beth Moore study, Believing God, is helping me grow. Maybe some people don't need "tools" to help them grow in faith but I do. And I need others to hold me accountable, to encourage me and to walk the path of faith with me.
The Word of God lives in me. Wahoo! That IS the greatest way to grow faith and to live an overcoming life. That's one of the themes from our past several Bible studies. The Word of God gets in me through studying, reading, reflecting, memorizing, nightmares, and talking about the Word of God. Isn't it fun to have a friend or two where you just can't help yourself but talk about Scripture?

I confess.

I have been living more as a fear-er than an overcome-er. This nightmare has "awakened" me to this fact.

Dear Lord, thank You for the creative ways You try to catch my attention. Help me to settle down into Your Word today and breathe in Your mightiness and love. Help me to breathe out fear and live in trust. Thank you Lord for the women in my life who help me and who model faith as a lifestyle. Amen.

Sorry I Haven't Been Around

My new glasses gave me eye strain which got progressively worse (starting last Monday) over the weekend. Reading and looking was painful and tiring.

Sunday and Monday I wore an eye patch - and not because I'm a pirate.
Today I wore it all afternoon and took it off to do some homework.
My eyes are sore now. After Bible study I'll put the patch back on.

Please pray that my eye continues healing and is all well by Thursday.

That's when I should get my new glasses. Pray that the prescription is correct this time.
I am nervous about wearing them.

All my papers, homework, and projects for school are due Dec. 1. It's going to be a long several weeks, especially if my eye isn't all better.

I am chomping at the bit to read the comments and then make comments myself. Well, my eyes aren't chomping. :-(

I like to eat chocolate cake (with chocolate frosting) in a bowl covered with half and half.
I have a piano in my home I have not played. I hope to start lessons soon. I had lessons when I was in grade school. I wish my mom made me continue.
I’ve also taken clarinet and guitar lessons.
I have no innate sense of rhythm – I cannot clap and sing at the same time. Although, SI says she can teach me that as well as piano. I’m sure about the piano, not so sure about the clapping.
I am allergic to pine trees, cats, lillies, and grass.
And now parakeets. I just give away Tea and Luke, two gorgeous parakeets, because within 10 minutes of being in the same room with them my asthma got REAL bad. They are in a temporary home – anyone able to give them a permanent home? They come with a nice cage, lots of toys, and food. And they love to chatter! I miss them.
I am allergic to metal too. So that means no jewelry.
BUT I found a gorgeous pair of earrings that I am able to wear. I originally bought them for my sista for Christmas. I couldn’t remember if she had a pair like them so I wore them over to her house. Long story short: She doesn’t. My ears didn’t react. So I got an early Christmas present and sista still doesn’t have hers.
I have half of my Christmas shopping done and all wrapped! (Did this in August.) I wrapped them all in red wrapping paper. Once the tree is up, I’ll put on green ribbon and bows.
CL (4 y.o.) had a dream about me, knights and a castle. I’m not too sure about the details but it sounded like I wasn’t in any way connected to something scary. Too cute.
It was also too cute when he asked, “Sue, will the birds stay here fo-ever?” I think mom’s in trouble. It was so much cuter in person!
I have 17 shoeboxes to give to Operation Shoebox. Most are NOT from me. Cindy, my friend and fellow graduate from William Jessup University, is a teacher and got her students involved. They received community hours (ch) for doing this. It’s (ch) required at their school.
I like to look at and buy cards. However, I’m not too good about mailing them.
Daylight savings time ALWAYS screws me up. My kiddos don’t understand and think a. I’m weird, b. Making it up and definitely c. BOTH.
I collect white pitchers. I bought most of them in England at boot sales for 25-50 pence. A boot sale is a bunch of people gathering in a parking lot and selling their wares from their trunk (boot).
I learned how to drive a stick shift when I was 30 years old in England. The hardest part was not driving on the left hand side of the road. It was being able to go once I stopped on an incline.
I love all kinds of surprises. I.e. On Saturday night I met friends, Clayton and Judy, from England for dinner. (They now live in WA.) Tim, my son, was able to go with me, BUT they didn’t know he was coming. You should have heard the joyous cries and seen the tears. Tim spent a lot of time at their English farm caring for sheep, slopping hogs, etc.
My oldest niece is going to have a baby in the Spring! Wahoo! I’ll be a great-aunt. And I’ll get to snuggle a baby with my DNA.
I was able to watch two of my nieces be born.
Two of my nieces have my middle name: Jean. (Not the same two as in #19.)
I don’t let anyone sleep on my pillow.
I keep important messages in shorthand on my palm. I call it my solar powered palm pilot.
I don’t like crumbs in the butter, peanut butter, mayonnaise, or jam containers.
The meat has to be on the right-hand side of the plate.
I like to go bare-foot. Even when I lived in places that snowed (CO, Canada), I’d check the mail without first putting on shoes.
I’ve been a calendar girl and even had my own month! It was a calendar put out by the dairy association and I was an infant. Unfortunately the calendar has disappeared in one of the many moves we made throughout my growing up years. Just as well, no-one likes a braggart with proof.
I once had a spider plant that I named Priscilla. This confused my dad to no end. He kept calling my brother’s wife Priscilla – her name is Crystal.
If it’s a full moon, dark outside, and you pretend to be a monster, I’ll get irrationally afraid, scream, and run away from you.
I have a phobic fear of the dentist and heights. Mammograms – piece of cake. But dental work and the catwalk? Again with the irrational fear.
I have a knife wound in my derriere. Not an exciting, blood pumping story. Dull and stupid more describes the incident.
Even though I am a native Californian, I have never seen a whale in the wild. Doesn’t it seem funny to call the coastal waters of CA “the wild”?
I’ve been to Disneyland so many times I’ve lost track. My favorite rides are the Pirates of the Caribbean and It's a Small World. I also like the Haunted House and Tom Sawyer's Island. Oh, and the fireworks are spectacular. For a spell, my folks had a home in Anaheim. We could see the fireworks from our home.
It’s probably been a decade since the last visit. Time to go again. Anyone game?
I’ve had three surprise parties. I was surprised by one of them.
I feel embarrassed, lost and sad about being divorced.
My children, Timothy and Elizabeth, mean the world to me and I would relive everything in my life so that I could have them, again, as my children.
I wore my first contacts at 13. I stopped wearing contacts at 27. My eyes became too dry.
I am a flybaby. Not a very good one, but at least I am taking flysteps.

When I read the Bible I underline the parts that “speak” to me. When I am in need of encouragement, I copy those underlined verses and read them over and over.
I like decorating Christmas trees according to a theme or color.
I love walls painted with COLOUR! My front room is painted a warm brown and my back room is yellow. My son calls it the “we all live in the yellow submarine” room. My front door is maroon.
My favorite singing artist is Twila Paris.
My favorite (right now) song is In Christ Alone.
I like to read the Minor Prophets when I’m feeling out-of-sorts.
I try to read a Proverb and a Psalm each day.
I like to take notes and underline verses in my Bible.
My first Bible was an NASB.
My current favorite version is the NIV.
I like to look up verses at Biblegateway.com so I can (easily) read them in different versions.
Would you use your boyfirend/husband's toothbrush? No – unless stuck in the wilderness for weeks and weeks and weeks.
What about a friend's? No. Not even if stuck.
If you could go back and relive one day, which one would it be and why? Any day at home with my children. At the time I felt fatigued and worried too much about peripheral things. I’d like to savour the mundane and enjoy the simple pleasures of home.
When were you the most ill you've ever been? I had a gall bladder attack which lastest several days. Recovery lasted several weeks. During the attack nothing comforted me; I was in too much pain to really think about anythihg. I just tried to sleep.
What comforted you through that illness? During the recovery phase I kept telling myself that I’d get better someday so do what it took to get there. I didn't let myself project into the future.
Who was your very first crush and how old were you? Carl is the first boy who took my breath away. I was about 8 or 9. I was so into Carl that I had to write, in chalk, on the back of my dresser, about our eternal future, Susie + Carl. One of my niece’s has that dresser. Isn’t it funny that I have no memory of what he looked like, what I liked about him or if he even knew I existed. All I know is that it was very important at that time.
When my kids were of (legal) trick-or-treat age we took them to the air force base. It was awesome to see ALL those kids going house-to-house. Just like when I was a kid or just like in ET. HUndreds of kiddos in costume roaming the streets.
Except for one year, I sewed them a costume. One year was way too crazy and I didn’t have the time. I felt like such a failure as a mother because I didn’t make that time.
My mom always made my costumes too. My favorite one was a yellowish Indian costume with real beading and feathers.
My mom’s favorite costume was me dressed as Mrs. Piggly Wiggly: Wig, big clothes, a pillow stuffed in front and back. I cried. After I won the prize for first place I stopped crying.
Every time I hear Melodramma by Andrea Bocelli I cry after the first few moments of music. I don’t understand the words but I understand the feeling.
I cry during movies, commercials, books, weddings, baptisms, singing at church. I can’t stop myself during these times.

I fractured my ribs as the result of a bike accident. My brother was on the handle bars while I steered a fast path down a steep hill and turned into a driveway of pebbles. Brother flew clear and was fine. The handle bars smashed into my ribs and I wasn’t fine. I think we were mimicking something we saw on TV. We were tweeners.
I climbed a telephone pole and got stuck. The fire department had to rescue me. I was about 3 or 4.
I like gardening. When I lived in CO I shopped at a grocery store that also had a garden section. That way I could bring home plants each week to put into the yard.
I graduated from high school in 1976. The same year as America’s bicentennial.
My birthday is the same day as the Girl Scout birthday.
I loved being a Girl Scout. I especially enjoyed working for the merit badges. I had the most badges in my troop. Sometimes I now get to help one of my niece’s work on a merit badge.
I was a co-leader for my daughter’s Daisy troop. We lived in England. Those girls were so precious. My co-leader, Deborah, was great at planning activities. We had a lot of fun together.
Growing up I was a copious reader. I was good for nothing until the book was done. My mom would have to hide my book if she wanted me to do something.
I haven’t done much pleasure reading the past few years. But I still have the same urge to finish the book in one sitting.
I saw the northern lights when I lived in Canada.
I went scuba diving off the coast of Galveston, Texas.
While there we boarded The Calypso: Jacques Cousteau’s boat. Unfortunately Jacque was someplace else filming something.

I went with my family on an Easter egg hunt at Henry the 8th's favorite castle - Leed's. Beautiful grounds laden with Cadbury eggs.
I used to be skinny. So long ago I don’t remember.
I’ve never had plastic surgery, but if I had the money, I’d seriously consider it.
I chickened out getting lasik surgery. The week before I was to go I had my last doctor appointment. My regular doctor couldn’t see me so I had his replacement. He wore glasses. And said, “If it were me, I wouldn’t do this.” He then said something about the possibility of my eye exploding because I have (controlled) glaucoma. That was all I needed to hear. No surgery for me.
I have had laser surgery for my eyes to correct glaucoma. But at that point it was do this or take tons of medication daily and face the possibility of going blind. The laser surgery was quick, easy and effective. And the glaucoma is still under control without medication.
I lose things easily and often - especially my keys, calendar and purse.
I saw puffins in Scotland on the island of Skye.
My favorite bird is the Rocky Mountain Bluebird. I saw it in CO.
I heard a Mocking bird and Cuckoo bird in England.
I saw penguins on the beach in Felixstowe, England. Not many people believe me. But I did!
My dream is to fly high like a bird in a hot air balloon.
I jumped on a bouncy castle on my last birthday. My wonderful family pooled their money and ordered one for the WHOLE day. I couldn’t believe what hard work bouncing is. And HOW FUN it was. Thank you again, FAMILIA.
I often called my mom “mamacita.” I miss you mamacita.
I’ve had four screen names: momoftimandliz, BlessedMom, ScrappinAuntie, and Susan2007. The first three are obvious. The 2007 referred to when I thought I’d have my masters. Looks like it’ll be 2008 or more’n likely 2009.
I was once kicked off an online scrapbook forum. The moderator made a harsh, personal comment about someone in the group. I wrote back that I was uncomfortable with such information and asked that such comments not be made public. I was banned for flaming! Oh, the uproar it caused. I had such hurt feelings. Now it seems so silly.
I can only hear on the phone if I put the phone to my left ear.
I hear best, in person, if I can also see your lips. Sometimes my kiddos tease me by hiding their faces or by covering my eyes.
I finally bought a headset for my telephone. Now I can multi-task with two hands. I also got a new phone so I can be sure that I’ll get ALL my phone messages. I can’t believe how inexpensive it was. Too bad I waited so long.
I hope to see The Polar Express at the movies this year. I especially like the dance and song about hot chocolate.
The weirdest job I had was a night-time receptionist at a mortuary. My best job is working at CNC.
I don’t know how people can live life without a personal relationship with God.

While I didn't turn around a nation, or deter an intruder, I did reconnect with a relational God. I was reminded of how important those basics are. I relearned it's NOT about me. And that was enough.

"Wow, That’s Hot!"

Me: What did I put into the potato salad?
Sista: Did you sprinkle spicy paprika on top?
Me: I didn’t know there was spicy paprika. That’s what I must have done.

Last night we celebrated Sista’s husband’s birthday and he requested I bring my secret recipe potato salad. I just checked. I didn’t use paprika. I used cayenne pepper!

Good thing I am picking up my new glasses today!

Below is the secret recipe – it truly is one of the best ones for potato salad.

Calico Surprise Potato Salad
Ingredients to serve 8

4 potatoes – peeled and cubed – boiled until tender, cooled
½ cup celery, chopped
½ cup carrot, grated
½ cup sweet relish
½ cup sweet red onion, chopped
1 cup dry roasted peanuts (shhhh! secret ingredient)
½ cup (or so) mayonnaise
Several squirts Ranch Dressing
Several sprinkles Paprika
One sprig of parsley

Combine all ingredients, except for paprika and parsley into a big bowl. Put in more veggies and mayonnaise to taste. Lightly sprinkle paprika and lay parsley on top for festive look.

NOTE: You can also add sweet corn, sliced black or green olives, and/or pimento. The most important part of this recipe is the peanuts.

Daughter Scores Second in Fencing Tournament

6 weeks ago Elizabeth joined the university fencing team.

This past weekend they had their first tournament. She came in 2nd in the women's category and 6th overall (out of 31 men and women).

Can you tell I'm proud?

When my kiddos were younger we lived in England for about 5 years. On many occasions both kids played in their Robin Hood costumes. I remember visiting the real Sherwood Forest with both in character. Sweet memories.

I'll have to look and see if I have the pictures. And the costumes!

I did indeed go to hear Audio Adrenaline (AA) and Mercy Me (MM).

Last week there was an invite from Sandra on my home phone to go see Audio Adrenaline. I wasn't real familiar with AA ( or MM) and thought it was a car show.

I did think it a bit strange that a bunch of women would go to a car show. Then I thought, "Why not do something new? And It'll be fun to hang out."

This was not a car show.

I'm sure my kiddos are surprised I saw AA. It's the type of rocky music I kept telling them to TURN down when they lived at home. But I had my earplugs (from retreat). And while I didn't understand a lot of the words, it was cool to know they were godly words.

It WAS awesome to see, hear, and FEEL a stadium full of mostly younger people praising God.

Mercy Me lead us in some great praise songs and included a "preaching" time. The hanging time was pretty great too.

# 2 - Pumpkin Patch Hopping Was A . . .

I don't know where this past month went. I would've liked to have either decorated or carved a pumpkin.

I was at Raleys today and saw that ALL their pumpkins are $1.00. While tempted to buy one, I gave in to the idea that I missed the boat on this one.

Several weekends ago I was driving with my daughter at night and scared myself so much I let HER drive. So I went to the eye doctor.

It means I definitely needed new glasses.

FrugalForLife wants to start a wave of information- What are 25 different ways you save money?

Here's my list of what I've recently done or am in the process of doing. Don't know if I'll hit 25 though. I tried to write about things I didn't see on the other lists.

Cancel cell phone.
Don't eat out at fast food places.
Keep a supply of snacks and water in car.
Have only the basic phone service including no long distance.
Use a phone card for long distance calls. It costs me 3.5 cents/minute.
Call Internet provider and car insurance to see if eligible for a lower rate.
Buy Christmas presents year round - shop the sales/clearances. And then STOP. I don't buy someone more presents because I spent less (well, most of the time).
Check out the dollar store for food. I routinely buy Yoplait yogurts 3 for $1.00.
I buy fresh fruit from the Koreana Plaza market. (Thanks to BB for the tip.) It is much cheaper there, especially when I buy a bag (about 5 pounds) of fruit. I buy a couple of these bags every two weeks or so. Many times it is more than I can eat.
Don't buy ice cream - make a fruit shake with some of the fruit, milk (or yogurt) and ice cubes. Much better for me and I get more fruit into my diet.
Cancel Netflix. My friends say they don't mind if I borrow from them. I don't watch that many movies so it'll be a long time before I watch all their movies.
Only wear yucky clothes when cleaning or using bleach products. I have this terrible habit of getting bleach stains on my clothes. It is upsetting when they are good clothes. I know this should be a "no duh," but I'm still learning this one.
Go to BigWords.Com when wanting to buy textbooks. It will compare 6 or so websites to see which one has the best deal. It also compares books, DVDs, video games and music. It then calculates price, shipping, promotions, and coupons at every major store, and finds the lowest total price.
Pray - ask God to show me where to cut back.
Don't take my credit card, checks or ATM when window shopping.
Keep only a small amount of cash in my purse to prevent splurge buying
I have health insurance for my dog at Banfield Pet Hospital. I save many dollars each year.
This past summer I put shade cloth over my screens. Kept the rooms cooler.
I no longer drink bottled water at home. I use a Brita filter on my water jug.
Tidy up, put like things together. After I did this, I found that I had plenty of shampoo, bar soap and pens.
Use up what I have. Don't buy anymore or anything like it until the present supply is gone.
Buy printer ink online. Don't use one of those fill your own ink kits. I think using that product is what killed my printer.
Have a reason to save money. I.e. I want to pay off my school loans. I want to fill a box or two for Operation Christmas Child. I want buy a new iron.
Buy clothes secondhand.
Don't be in a hurry to buy. Wait and see if it's a real need. Wait and see if God will provide. Here's a small example. Last week I was out of tea that I like. Becasue it wasn't a necessity, I didn't go buy more even though I wanted more. Later that day a friend called and said she had an extra box of tea and would I like it. Since I only like a couple of kinds, I asked her what it was. Yep, it was one I liked. Thanks Friend! Thanks GOD!

BONUS: Check your credit card statement carefully for "mistakes." Yesterday I checked mine and found a strange charge I didn't authorize. Last year, I gave someone a magazine subscription as a present for Christmas. The subscription is almost over and apparently the company decided to renew it for me! I cancelled that real quick. If I could've found a way to talk to a REAL LIVE person, I would've left a complaint. I've never had this happen to me before.

I caught this series of articles (20 of them) about saving money at freemoneyfinace.com.

One of the things I learned was how to sign up for a Free Entertainment Savers Guide from SBC. Check it out - there's more.

THEN I found FrugalForLife's call for folks to submit their own "25 Ways I Save $." 21 people submitted 25 ideas. Yikes! A plethora of ideas.

One idea I'll use use is from Perspectives from New Hampshire. It's Plastic "shrink wrap" my window coverings.

The Gospel of the Kingdom by George Eldon Ladd

CT writes, "Ladd's work called a generation of evangelicals to a higher level of scholarship, and his "already-but-not yet" take on God's kingdom influenced charismatic theologians and cessationists alike."

Do you ever read the reviews of books at amazon.com? I do. Especially if I don't know much about the book in question. Like this book, although I've heard of it, I don't know much about it.

So I checked out some of the reviews. Look at this one by Gary Gillespie:

The Gospel of the Kingdom is a terrific book which every Christian should read. A curious fact is that it was written in 1959, well ahead of its time.

We are subjected to various views of the Kingdom of God and how it relates to the Church, Israel and the end times.
There is much confusion as to what the Kingdom is, and when and where will it be. Ladd answers these critical questions.

The chapters deal with. . .

1. What is the Kingdom of God.
2. The Kingdom is tomorrow.
3. The Kingdom is today.

In addition he gives a good exposition of how to understand the parables of Kingdom and an excellent section on how to understand the Sermon on the Mount.

He takes the difficult passages of Jesus' sermon and answers the questions what does Jesus mean that one should "cut off your hand" or "gouge out your eye" if necessary to enter the Kingdom.
It is a practical book as well which calls Christians to commit all to the advancement of the Kingdom of God and the role that God wants all of us to play in its institution.

It is easy to read and extremely informative. I could not reccommend it more highly.

The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind by Mark A. Noll

Historian Mark Noll wrote this book 12 years ago. According to Christianity Today this book shaped evangelical thought more than any other book... "The scandal of the evangelical mind is that there is not much of an evangelical mind" was his main critique.

If he were to write the book today, he says, "It would have a different tone:

More hopeful than despairing,
More attuned to possibilities than to problems,
More concerned with theological resources than theological deficiencies.

Christianbook.com says this about the book:

In this treatise on the state of the intellectual status of the evangelical movement, Mark Noll reminds us that 'modern evangelicals are the spiritual descendants of leaders and movements distinguished by probing, creative, fruitful attention to the mind' and challenges us to reclaim that heritage.
Noll argues that if Christians are to serve God with their minds, they must do their homework, and think intellectually.

So, have you read this book? I confess, I haven't - yet.

I have to confess rousing strength is not always my first reaction in the face of difficulties. Recently my small group and I went through I Peter. Many, many good truths about difficulties (suffering) were presented:

I am grateful that God has such words for me so I can grow more and more into His likeness.

I believe in the importance of being a walky-talky: having your walk match your talk. When I behave differently, I agonize. When they are congruent, I am peaceful.

I still struggle with being a people pleaser at times and so I am not always congruent. That's one reason I appreciate being around ladies who SPEAK their minds. No guessing what they mean/want. And they are good role models for me.

3. Follow the grain in your own wood. Howard Thurman

This reminds me of what Dr. Dobson says about the importance of allowing our children to follow their own bent. This is important advice for adults too. My problem has been figuring out just what is my bent. I wonder if this is a problem many women deal with?

I am thrilled about the Spiritual Gift inventory that our church has been doing. It's a tool to help you figure out (part of) your grain.

I do meme's for the same reason. It gives me the opportunity to think and rethink about what's true for me.

How's This For A Birthday Present?

In September I attended a unique birthday party for a darling 4 year old.

I asked mom what present Birthday Girl would like.

"How about if you make a donation to World Vision on behalf of BG. She has plenty of things," mom said.

"I'd like to give Birthday Girl a present though," I said to mom.

"Maybe you could take the amount you were going to spend and give half to World Vision and half to Birthday Girl?" mom suggested.

"If I were really brave, I'd ask everyone to do this and have them give ALL the money to World Vision," mom concluded.

So today, I did just that. In honor of this precious one, we bought a wheelchair for another precious one. I put a little extra money in because I thought BG would like to give this gift as much I do.

We bought it because, "Many of the world’s more than 100 million physically disabled poor must crawl or drag themselves along the ground, suffering as a result from illness, filth, and humiliation. A wheelchair supplies independence and hope. . . "

I'm not trying to brag, but want to give y'all another idea. And family, this would be a great gift idea for me as well. World Vision's gift catalog has a lot of choices.

Oh, and I was able to buy BG a nice gift too. Isn't it amazing how sometimes those sales spring OUT of nowhere?

Out of the Saltshaker and into the World by Rebecca Manley Pippert

"Christians and non-Christians have something in common," author Rebecca Pippert noted. "We're both uptight about evangelism." Out of the Saltshaker helped generations of fearful students (and other would-be evangelists) to loosen up.

I read this book years ago. I remember it helping my fear issues with out-in-the-open evangelism. I'm more of a love-em or friendship-them-to-the-Lord type of evangelism.

Recently I was looking at Out of the Saltshaker and thinking about hosting a small group to go through it. Anyone interested for the Winter quarter?

Pippert speaks frequently on the theme of sharing our faith in ways that are natural and consistent with who God made us - themes that are taken from Out of the Salt Shaker.

Yes, they are. And it took F. F. Bruce only 120 tiny pages to show it.

Which Gift Do You Wish You Had?

Pastor Mike has been speaking about spiritual gifts and presented a midweek seminar so we could learn and discuss our gifts.

I have finally taken the time to look over the free online inventories. This spiritual gift inventory is the closet one to what CNC people used last week. It appears to have been written by the same author.

Paper (hardcopy) inventories may be bought at church, Berean bookstore or online.

These are my high score-ers (several were tied):

I have now taken a gift inventory a total of three times in the past two weeks! One of my classes empahasized the same topic during the same time frame. We had to take two different spiritual gift tests.

I am surprised that faith and knowledge scored so highly on this test. The other two tests showed that administration and leadership were among the high scores.

No surprises regarding the low scores.

Which gifts I wish I had:

Voluntary Poverty: "The special ability that God gives to certain members of the Body of Christ to renounce material comfort and luxury and adopt a personal lifestyle equivalent to those living at the poverty level in a given society in order to serve God more effectively."
Giving: "The special ability that God gives to certain members of the Body of Christ to contribute their material resources to the work of the Lord with liberality and cheerfulness."
Intercession: "The special ability that God gives to certain members of the Body of Christ to pray for extended periods of time on a regular basis and see frequent and specific answers to their prayers, to a degree much greater than that which is expected of the average Christian."

WHY?

I can see the extreme value of giving on a regular basis. I desire to see my church involved in evangelization, aide ministries, and keeping current with our budgetary needs. I'd like to have these first two gifts so that I would actively think about those needs (and others) and be compelled to give. I once heard (or read?) that only a small fraction (10% maybe?) tithe regularly. How much more could be accomplished if we all gave regularly?
I desire to not be so attached to stuff. If I had the gift of voluntary poverty, stuff would be low on the priority list of how to spend money entrusted to me. My stuff won't make it into heaven. But maybe my example and "extreme" giving could help people see their need for Jesus and then be able to join me in Heaven.
We are to pray at all times because prayer is our best weapon. Sometimes I have a hard time being organized in my prayer life. There are so many needs that I get to feeling overwhelmed and sometimes just quit way too soon.

Several times I've had a burden to pray for someone. I'd wake up with thoughts about that person, carry those thoughts all day and go to bed with them. Once the need was over, so were those thoughts. It wasn't anything I did; the prayer burden came from God.

If I had the gift of intercession, I would be compelled to pray in an orderly and continuous, thorough way. I know that prayer "works" and desire to see more of God's intervening touch.

I am praying that if God doesn't wish to give me these gifts, that at least He will help me to make the practices a higher priority in my life.

# 48. "The Hiding Place" by Corrie ten Boom with John and Elizabeth Sherrill

While CT focused on the situational ethics questions raised by this book, I focused on the love and forgiveness answers.

I last read this book years ago, but the I Corinthians 13 love that Corrie showed towards the Jews, the others in the concentration camp, and the guards was miraculous. Something empowered by a Supernatural Being. God.

While I probably won't ever be caged or stereotypically despised, I will (and do) have great needs that need a greater God to handle. I need, want and am thankful for supernatural empowerment by my loving Father God.

This type of forgiveness reminds me of how the Amish community is responding to a killer's family. Without Christ, or a biblical theology, this type of communal forgiveness is not possible. Is it?

I pray that when I am called upon to grace those around me, I do. That is one of my earnest prayers.

Anyway, share what impact this book has made on you.

# 49. "Knowledge of the Holy" by A. W. Tozer.

"What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us." AW Tozer

Do you agree? Disagree?

Tozer believes, "Worship is pure or base as the worshipper entertains high or low thoughts about God" (p. 1).

Who do you say God is? Tozer says many of us are not in touch with "our real idea of God." Indeed theses ideas "may lie buried under the rubbish of conventional religious notions and may require an intelligent and vigorous search before it is finally unearthed and exposed for what it is" (p. 2). I think we all have heretical thoughts/beliefs about God.

One way to unearth these is to read about God and compare our ideas to truth.

Knowledge of the Holy describes 19 attributes of God. Each chapter begins with a prayer and in a few pages (6-8) boils down the essential points of each trait.

The information is concise and simple enough for a new Believer and yet deep enough to use as support material for papers in college. (I read through chapter 13, The Divine Transcendence, many times in order to get a grip on that topic for a final.)

Don't be fooled though. Even were you to memorize each word, you would not fully know God. But any information you do internalize will surely help you grow in faith, hope, and love.

Reading this book also increased my AWE for God.

I haven't read this book or even heard of it. :-(

Here is what one site says about the book:

It's been in print nearly continuously since 1957.

Smith countered the then–prevalent ideas about revivalism.
At the time, many scholars assumed that revivalism was a conservative force that impeded change.
Smith argued that revivalism often expanded visions and created energies that initiated, rather than hindered, social reform.

These are books that have shaped evangelicalism as we see it todayÂnot an evangelicalism we wish and hope for. . . Books that over the last 50 years have altered the way American evangelicals pray, gather, talk, and reach outÂnot books that merely entertained.

Sometimes CA Courts Shock Me - And That's Good

Traditional Marriage Upheld in CA Court

ProtectMarriage.com released the following statement:

Sacramento, CA – Earlier today California’s First District Court of Appeal released its two-to-one decision upholding Proposition 22 and California’s other traditional marriage laws that limit marriage to a man and a woman.

Today’s appellate decision reversed a lower court’s previous ruling that the marriage laws unlawfully discriminate against same-sex couples.

The ProtectMarriage.com Coalition:

Broad-based coalition of organizations, churches, and individuals
Believes that marriage’s foremost purpose is the raising of healthy children in a family with a mom and a dad
Views the appellate court decision as yet another necessary step toward protecting traditional marriage in California.
This decision is consistent with the recent national trend of traditional marriage laws being upheld against legal challenge by same-sex marriage advocates.
The highest state courts of New York and Washington also recently upheld traditional marriage laws prior to today’s California court decision.

my heart is soooo sad today

4 Funerals have taken place today in a town I don't know and amongst people I don't know.

And yet I care and am affected by their deaths.

The darlings buried were 13, 8 and 7 (2 of them). A 12 year-old will be buried tomorrow. They died as a result of one man's struggle with sin.

Haven't we seen enough of what happens when we don't become reconciled to God, to others, and ourselves?

If I don't reconcile and stay reconciled, I may never go out and shoot innocent children. But I will hurt "innocent" relationships. Do you know what I mean? Have you been there? Are you there now?

I am angry and scared and soooo sad about these deaths.

And I don't understand. But I am ok with that. I believe God is ok with that too. I agree with Lizzy Fisher, an Amish grandmother, "“You think about them, you cry about them . . . and then you have to let go of things you can’t explain.”

But there are things I can do. Practice forgiveness. Send donations. Work on my "sin" issues. Pray for spiritual, physical, and emotional reconciliation.

This mourning Amish community of Nickel Mines is also doing something. They are practising "forgiveness, faith and a determination to move forward." An Amish neighbor comforted the Roberts family hours after the shooting and extended forgiveness to them.

They are also sharing love. "At the behest of Amish leaders, a fund has also been set up for the killer's widow and three children." "The hurt is very great," Gertrude Huntington said. "But they don't balance the hurt with hate." Huntington, a Michigan researcher has written a book about children in Amish society.

Falling Leaves Ahead - From Your Trees or Your Life?

Gazillions of leaves are falling . . .
Into my yard.
On my roof.
Under my doormat (?).
All over my car.
In my outdoor glider.

One time a bunch even descended upon me (and in my shirt) as I left my house.

Why in the world are these leaves attacking me and others en masse?
Because it’s Autumn.

Technically, it’s because there is less sunlight and water, the tree stops making food and grows a seal which disconnects the leaf from the tree. This is a protective measure the tree “instinctively" makes in order to help itself survive the winter.

So what does all this have to do with anything relevant to my life as a grownup Believer?

There are times in my life when it feels like autumn.
I lose my leaves, my sense of connection with my core, my energy. I shut down for a season. These leaves can be my composure, joy, temper, courage, integrity, commitments. I bet you can name some more.

A tree in this cycle is healthy. When I’m in this cycle, not so healthy.

It always happens when I move myself (not always intentionally) away from the light of the Son and water of the Word. If this goes on for a spell, a seal forms around my heart.

At the point where the stem of the leaf is attached to the tree, a special layer of cells develops and gradually severs the tissues that support the leaf.

In my heart, these layers are caused by fatigue, unbelief, anger, pain, fear, overload. And when I don’t regularly feed myself with truth, as found in God’s word, I lack the ability to take care of myself properly. I feel severed from God’s leading.*

When the leaf is finally blown off by the wind or falls from its own weight, it leaves behind a leaf scar.

I’ve got leaf scars! Too many are the result of my own choices.

But I am grateful that God is . . .

the Master of autumn and spring and every season.
stronger than any protective seal I allow to come between us.
constantly wooing me back into right relationship with Him, with others and with myself.

Sisters, if you are in an autumn season . . .

Drink some water (the Bible).
Sit in the Son (Christ) for a bit.
Tell Him how you feel.
Ask for His help.
Dare to share with a friend what the layers are.
Seek prayer from others.
Unload your life.

It’s that simple. And it’s that hard.

Autumn is about positive, protective, preparation for winter. It’s good for a tree to drop its business all over - everywhere.

When our autumn means we protect ourselves from God, others, ourselves, and when it means we drop our business all over - everywhere, it means trouble. But it is trouble that has an answer.

Will you join me in believing that God really has the answers for a good life?

Let’s use this earthly autumn to see where our hearts are going dormant.

I'll Take She Loathes for 20

I have lived...

1. in California – southern, midstate and Sacramento area. I was born 3 months early in the Queen of Angels hospital in Los Angeles. My mom was so frazzled when it came time to take me home from the hospital, she forget the paperwork and had to go back. When my grandma Ruby called to see what the hold up was, Mom said, “I had to go back home to get papers for that @%$# baby.”

2. in a co-ed dorm at Linfied College, Oregon. Back then I didn’t have freckles I had rust spots.

3. in fear because I knew the boogey man under my bed really came in through the window. I had this fear until my late 30’s.

4. in Anchorage, Alaska – where I learned how to ice skate at recess, got my tongue frozen-stuck on the tether ball pole, slept-walked into the woods near our house and caught my first fish (a rainbow trout).

5. in Texas – I hated that we moved away Dec. of of my Junior year. I really, REALLY wanted to be on the 100 member Dixie Darling team. On my 16th birthday, some of my friends gave me a racy, very indiscreet magazine during spanish class. I turned so red and scolded my friends so loudly, I GOT caught and sent to the principle’s office. 3 days before my 16th bd, I became a Christian.

6. in Canada. That’s where we moved in Dec of 1975. I once lost my boyfrind while the two of us were riding on a skidoo across the lake. I couldn’t go back and find him because I also lost my contacts. Well, really a friend drank them, but that’s another story. Our first week in Ft. MacMurray, Alberta, we met a girlfriend (Louise) I knew when we lived . . .

7. in Puerto Rico. Louise and I first met in Junior High (middle school for you younger readers) at a private school in Ponce. I wore a blue plaid uniform which I loved. My first day of junior high I was so nervous I stuttered all day. I also lost my shorts because I was throwing them up and down – on one toss I miscalutated and they went over the wall (which didn’t go the ceiling) landing right on top of the librarian’s desk.

8. in New York on the shores of Lake Champlain. I was in preschool then and liked to climb on things. Back then, they didn’t chain down or cement the multi-tiered candy machines. I climbed on one and it fell right on top of me. On the ride, in the ambulance, to the emergency room, I didn’t say one thing. Sure sign of something wrong! Turns out, I was just scared stiff (and silent).

9. longer than both my parents – whom I miss very much.

10. long enough to know that dinosaurs are real and that pluto (the planet) isn’t.

11. the wonder of the birth of two of my nieces. So awesome. I even got to cut the cord for one of them. The daddy declined and I volunteered so quickly, I startled the doctor. But I wasn’t going to let that opportunity pass.
12. the salvation and the baptism of my two children. I cried tears of joy at both occassions.
13. the powerful, majestic beauty of a glacier.
14. the healing touch from God for my depression (after suffering for decades).
15. door-to-door for an all town evangelistic event in Ft. MacMurray.
16. the destructive nature of unforgiveness, anger and hate.
17. God’s redeeming power changing people from what they were (dead & defeated) to what they are – victorious, glorious, Saints.
18. how easy it is to believe bad things about a person without checking out if it’s true.
19. sacrificial love to selfish grabbing in a matter of hours in the same person – sometimes it’s me.
20. the excitement of my children when they believed that the sound they heard in the loch was really Nessie.

I have heard. . .

21. music that inspired me and depressed me.
22. a cuckoo bird (in England).
23. God’s still voice.
24. precious vows: “I now pronounce you man and wife.”
25. disallusionment pronouncement: “This marriage between x and y is now hereby dissolved.”
26. my children’s first words. Tim said ball and Elizabeth said Mama.
27. baby belly laugher and then HAD to laugh myself.
28. screams of dispair.
29. worship so Spirit-led the Angels HAD to be there. In fact, I kept my eyes closed because I was truly afraid to open them to see the angels. I then understood why every encounter (in the Bible) between an angel and human started with the angel saying, “Don’t be afraid.”
30. God’s delight in me and the affirmation that I am His, forever.

I have lost . . .

31. my car in multiple parking lots. That’s why I was so pleased that my present car has a panic beeper button.
32. my keys, cell phone, purse and tv remote more times than I can count. In fact, the remote is still lost.
33. my day-to-day and long term memory. Is there anything left?
34. the ability to be childlike and spontaneous.
35. interest in reading comics.
36. time engrossed in a good book or walking along the beach.
37. all shame when it comes to talking about my kiddos, nieces or ministry. I am, with God's help, losing all my shame from the past.
38. patience with my children when they younger. That is one of my biggest regrets.
39. track of what is happening in LOST.
40. my best friend.

I have found . . .

41. eternal salvation.
42. $300 on the floor of the Reno airport.

44. I like living alone – even though I get scared at night sometimes.

1. Crack in two eggs in a big bowl that’s clean. Throw away the eggshells.
2. Take a fork and poke at the egg yolks. And then stir it.
3. You can put strawberries in. [The surprise ingredient.]

4. Put the eggs in a pan that has a fire under it.
5. You get a spoon to pick up the cooked eggs to put them on a plate.
6. Put catsup but not Ranch [dressing] on the eggs.
7. Put everything away and wash the bowl and fork out.
NOTE: Orange juice would be a good match for this breakfast.

Remembering Rudolph Riccio

2,996 blogs and websites will unite today to pay tribute to one hero* by writing about thier life.

This blog honors Mr. Rudolph N. Riccio.

Rudolph Riccio was one of 2,996 people who lost his life on that infamous September 11, 2001 day.

Many, many hours of research did not provide a picture of Mr. Riccio.
I could not locate any personal tributes left to him on the countless 911 websites.
One group, http://www.unitedinmemory.net/, made a quilt in memory of the 911 victims. Mr. Riccio’s quilt-block listed his age incorrectly. But also on this quit block is the only bit of history shared on the internet about this gentleman.

Mr. Riccio’s life was lost, but not forgotten even though he was not personally and lavishly memorialized online. Mr. Riccio spent his last moments in the World Trade Center in the employ of Cantor Fitzgerald in the IT Department. Certainly fellow surviving workmates have fond memories of Mr. Riccio.

A lack of internet photos does not mean a lack of memories. Meg, Mr. Riccio’s sister became his “mother” when he was a teen after the death of both their parents. On the quilt block you can read about an incident that demonstrated Mr. Riccio’s sensitivity. This small bit of history shows a small portion of a man who lived, loved, and labored. An incorrect age does not negate the fact that Rudolph N. Riccio lived a full life. One that included . . .

Evidence suggests that Mr. Riccio "was a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities."*

We don’t need to know more details to know that even though cut short . . . Mr. Rudolph Riccio’s life impacted others and made a difference. He was a hero.

Meme rthymes with dream. Just so ya know, I just learned this.

1. What do you like most about where you live?
Hands down it has to be the people. I don’t live in the prettiest area or the quietest one. The weather is too hot for too long. The falling oaks leaves (from my heritage oak tree) drive me to distraction with the constantly accumulating leaf piles. But, the people are worth it all. And I’m not just talking about the most beautiful nieces ever.

1.b. Where would you most like to live?
This is not one of the original questions, but since this is all about me-me-me-me! I can make additions. And they can be fanciful!

In England in a thatched-roof house in a small village with a lyrical name like Chipping Campden in the Cotwsolds. Ellen Isaacs took the above photo.
In a (fully modernized) hut on a beach of Figi.
In a Rain Forest in a Swiss Family Robinson-style tree house. Again fully modernized and stocked.
In a room-with-a-view of the sea life in an underwater city.
In a snowbound cabin in Maine stocked with everything I'd need for the whole winter.
A six month stint on the international space station.
Finally, in a Christian commune.

2. Is there anything strange about where you live?
I think it is particularly strange when someone is animatedly talking into a cellphone while walking down the street holding hands with someone else. I see a lot of people doing this, young and old. My feelings would be so hurt if I were the ignored hand-holder.

3. What's one of your all-time favourite music albums, and why?
In my younger year’s it was With Love, Bobby. I did a quick internet search to see of I could find the cover of that album. When this page loaded andI saw all those pix of Bobby, my stomach did a small flip-flop. (It really did.) I suddenly felt what it was like to be so in love with him. I’d play that LP constantly and of course I’d daydream about boys. I even immortalized one boy on the back of my dresser by writing, "Susie heart Carl".

When Bobby sang Julie, do you love me?, I wished my name were Julie. Well until I'd hear Donny Osmond sing Donna. I was a bit fickle in my affections. Bobby, Donny and David Cassidy all had huge parts of my affection. However, Bobby usually had the prime spot because I adored Here Come the Brides and I once saw him perform at Disneyland (my very favorite playground).

4. Did you have a passion for something as a kid that you still have now? (If not - what is one of your passions now?)
Talking.* I talked a blue streak. About everything. And non-stop at times. In school the teachers would sit me up front as a way to curb my tongue. I once had to go to the principal for talking. My report cards were little tattle tells. Luckily for all who knew me, I spewed in spurts.

Now, I mostly talk in my head and listen (receive). I’ve learned how to complete the circle of communication so that it includes a sender and a receiver.

* In another meme I talked about my childhood passion to be a doctor. It's under the All About Me link that is supposed to be on the right side of this page. For some undetermined reason this file is content to stay hidden.

5. What do you like most about having a blog?
Sometimes I still get that urge to just talk and talk and talk and talk. I want to get it out of my head. A blog is one place to do that. I can spew and you have the choice of whether or not you’ll pay attention.

And you control the when. Just because I feel like talking doesn’t mean you feel like listening. But it's really cool when someone enters into a conversation with the writer (of the post) or another commenter.

Plus I like that it can be a verbal scrapbook of someone’s life. That’s the reason I created this blog: so that others will know what I am doing with my time. But because I like to talk (via writing) I include other bits of me too.

Pick 3 (or more) people and give them the opportunity to be Famous in Our Own Lunchtimes.
Infortunately most people who read this don't have blogs. This includes Lennie, Duker, Sista and Catlady. Doodah and I were tagged by Tonia. Maybe I have some lurkers who would like to be famous?

Postscript: Doodah said in her meme that she likes having a blog because, "It isn't really appropriate to interject an "essay" into a conversation." That is so what I want to do sometimes. I picture my ideal life being like a musical where at the right times, I could burst into song, and have center stage as I express my thoughts with clarity and beauty.

A blog is my center stage. I apologize that I don't always "sing" with clarity or beauty. Hopefully time and practice will improve both.

Oh and one more thing, it was so cool (to me) when I found out that several of my posts came up in a Google search! That's almost like being famous. (IMHO). I know it's also silly.

Easy Recipe With Neato Tip

I found a way to make my new, favorite summer dish (Pasta Primavera) a tich easier. Or at least neater.

Here's my basic recipe.

Steam frozen or fresh veggies (broccoli, carrots, zucchini, peas, corn).
Sauté onion, mushrooms, and peppers. I cook whatever is on hand until I have about 3 cups of steamed and sautéed veggies.
Make a white sauce while the veggies are cooking. I make 2 cups. This sauce is equally good with powdered milk, regular milk or soy milk.
Cook 1 lb. of linguine. Drain.
Put all the veggies and white sauce into the noodles.
Fold in 1-2 cups of washed and roughly chopped spinach.
Add handful of sliced cherry tomatoes.

Okay, here's the neato tip: Before I pour the dry noodles into a pot of boiling water, I break the noodles in half inside the package.

Maybe y’all already knew this one. I just discovered it last week while whipping up this dish (again). Doing it this way ensured that I didn’t drop even one noodle.

What I Did During My Study Vacation

Read and studied Acts, I & II Corinthians, Galatians, I & II Thessalonians.
Ironed (yep, I brought a dozen shirts and/or trousers to iron in case I wanted to watch a movie - which I did.)
Prayed.
Watched The Ron Clark Story on TNT. It's a true life story about how a young teacher from North Carolina helps his students, in a New York City public school, learn. Clark's mistakes, passion, persistence, playfulness, caring and innovation win over the students' initial reluctance (and downright defiance) to learn from him. This teacher reminded me so much of my brother-in-law I just HAD to watch it. Go here for more info about Clark.
Slept wonderfully.
Walked.
NO internet, other movies/tv or other books.

Study Time Fruitful But Not Enough

Have you ever crossed off every item on your to-do list and still felt . . . swamped? you didn’t do enough?

That happened to me while on my study “vacation.” I didn’t realize that there is such a disparity between my written to-do list and my mental to-do list.

Another thing I do is “beat myself up” because I didn’t accomplish more. That’s not very fair, is it? I now resolve to be gentler and more realistic regarding my to-do lists.

You know what’s so cool though?

God never has a hidden agenda when it comes to His to-do list for us.

Are you burdened by impossible to-do lists? Just how do you DO it all? What is your resolve today? Finally, are you ticking off the most important things on God’s To-DO List for You?

30 Days of Nothing Happens in September

Tonia at Intent recently shared a radical proposal: 30 Days of Nothing.

It’s not what you think.

While sitting around doing nothing sounds appealing this is an even better idea. Tonia, her family and many others are doing a 30 day fast from consumerism.

Tonia writes, "For 30 days, my family will buy nothing except our basic necessities. No clothes or books. No movies, no trips to the ice cream parlor. No paper, or pictures, or magazines. No fancy hair gel or take-and-bake pizza. Lattes? Nope. Nothing except what it takes to live."

Why do this?
"The goal of this month-long fast is to break the grip of materialism in our hearts and minds. We want to live in gratitude, not discontent; and we want to live with awareness of the great responsibility our affluence has laid on our shoulders."

Not only is this a gratitude/simplicity exercise, it is a social one as well. In this post Tonia exposes some of the huge gaps between how well the western world lives compared to most everyone else.

The Forks Eloped With The Socks!

What a shock. Have you heard?
This elopement is so absurd.
The forks declared their dying love
To the socks who lived above.
Eating veggies with a spoon is lame
As my ill-clad feet hide in shame.

I wouldn’t have minded a few forks and pairs of socks going astray.

But ALL* of them.

Who has ever heard of missing forks?

Spoons, knives, and those treacherous socks - YES.

But the forks?
They are normally so well behaved.

I finally decided to do something about the fork situation.

Tonight I found 8 (mismatched) silvery forks with shiny tines

and a purple swirled mug for $1.25 at the thrift store.

I’m still waiting for the socks to come home.

I know.

I’m an optimist.

* Okay. Not all of them. Out of a service of 12 forks, I can only find 4.

Out of all my socks, maybe two have sole mates.

Can anybody relate? Anybody?

Finding Obadiah and Philemon Easily

Recently Twila, World Vision and a Korean Kids Choir held a worship/informational service at First Covenant Church.

The stories and visuals stood in stark contrast to my cush life. My poorest/deprived day is unimagined wealth to a majority of the world.

Especially to the children.

I can give up some “extras” in my life to help a child. A cup of designer coffee . . . a Thrifty’s ice cream cone . . . an item from McDonald’s Dollar menu . . . a pair of clearance shoes from Wal-Mart . . . a gas station car wash.

Below are four ways you can help a child.

When the original Starter is kept in a quart-sized ziplock baggie it explodes when the room is warm. Yes, I know from personal experience. It also can explode in a gallon-sized ziplock baggie. Starter and I have not had a good week.
Paper Clips is a movie about a 24 million paperclip collection. An 8th grade class in rural Tennessee started collecting 6 million paperclips as a way "to grasp the concept of 6 million Holocaust victims." As word spread throughout the world, 24 million paperclips were sent in and COUNTED by hand. In a previous post, I wrote about how one red paperclip started the chain of trades that led to a house in Canada.
Hoch Fun-Food, the German confectioner is now marketing edible memo pads. "The package contains a food coloring ink pen and Hoch's edible wafer paper. Kids can now pass notes to each other in class, and eat the evidence before the teacher confiscates it." This same company also produces edible easter grass.

A Christmas Tale of Two Families

Excited shrieks reverberated throughout the downstairs as the children discovered the mounds of gifts under the tree. The tree, decorated with blinking lights, seemed to catch the excitement of the moment as each blink echoed the children’s cries, “It’s Christmas. It’s Christmas.”

Christmas 1996 was a magical slice of time for my family and I in CO.

Hysterical shrieks reverberated throughout the house as the parents discovered the empty bedroom of their 6 year old beauty queen. Later her broken, violated body was discovered in the basement where Christmas gifts were stored. Their tree, decorated with blinking lights, seemed to catch the hysteria of the moment as each blink echoed the mother’s heart-broken cry, “It’s Christmas. It’s Christmas.”*

Christmas 1996 was a never-ending nightmare for the Ramsey family in CO.

After a nightmare decade of dead-ends, wrongful accusations, and a never-ending speculative press, an arrest was made today in the murder of JonBenet Ramsey. Patsy, JonBenet’s mother, knew about the probability of this arrest in June before she died from ovarian cancer.

Snuggle and Pray
Back then as I heard the reports that haunted the news on that 1996 Christmas day, I snuggled my children often. And I prayed for the family. Today my children are not near enough or young enough to snuggle (without extreme protest). But I can still call and let them know of my love.

And I can still pray. Won’t you do the same?

I know nothing about the Benet family's and friends' religious convictions. But I have to ask, and I’m sure you have too, “How can anyone survive something like this without Christ?”

Unfair times, bad times, horrific times do occur, but there is a strong comfort and strength in the knowledge that nothing will separate me (or my children) from the saving love and grace that only God (through the Messiah) can give.

I really need to re-examine my involvement in this cookbook.

Received, cooked AND eaten some tasty recipes
Last Sunday I printed out many of the recipes, then I went to the grocery store. In a 24 hour period I’ve made, AND EATEN, Hashigami Chicken (Elaine), Cranberry Muffins with Berry Butter (Joan), Orzo and Shrimp Salad (Gillian) and I would have made Lemon Curd but the jelly jars I had didn’t have the lids.

Don’t forget I made Zucchini Rounds last weekend. AND, I also made White Chocolate Chip-Cranberry-Walnut cookies (recipe to go in the book) to take to the Believing God Study. I haven’t spent this much time total in my kitchen in months.

YIKES! At this rate I’m going to be more of an example of physical rather than spiritual growth, I assure you. It is torture reading these recipes – I drool, I fantasize, I COOK!

But may I say it was all DELICIOUS and I will soon be a larger, living testimony to the quality of the cookbook.

Basic Friendship Starter Bread Recipe

To one cup of the batter, add the following ingredients and mix well.

1 cup oil, 1/2 cup milk, 3 eggs, 1 tsp vanilla
In a separate bowl combine the following dry ingredients and mix well:
2 cups flour, 1 cup sugar, 1-1/2 tsp baking powder, 2 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp baking soda, 1 - (5.1 oz) box instant vanilla pudding, 1/2 tsp salt, 1 cup nuts
Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients.
Mix and pour into two well greased and sugared bread pans.
Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour.

Finally, It's Day 10 for the Friendship Starter

Here's the next part of the recipe:

Dump the entire starter into a glass bowl. Add 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk.
Mix with a wooden or plastic spoon until smooth.
Take two one-gallon ziplock bags and pour a generous cup of starter into each bag.
Give these two starters, with a copy of the instructions, to CNC women.
Make one loaf of bread or muffins with one generous cup of starter.
Keep one generous cup of starter so you can start the whole cycle over again.

I will post Bread recipes tomorrow.

TIP: On the bags I am giving away I taped on a business card with some instructions:
Day 1 – August 14
Day 6 – August 19: Feed Me: 1 cup sugar, 1 cup flour, 1 cup milk
Day 10 – August 23: Add to contents of bag: 1 cup sugar, 1 cup flour, 1 cup milk

I kept forgetting what day it was (for the starter) so thought this info might come in handy. We’ll see.

I spoke with K last night and she said, rather proudly, that an announcer on BBC America said the above statement.

Danger is always a tactical option for our enemy
The news coming out the last twelve hours has once again reminded us all that danger and death is a stark reality in a world consumed with following man-made and demonically influenced ideologies (from simple selfishness to terrorism). Our out-of-control world will always remain that way as long as we insist on ignoring our Creator God and His plan.

When we don’t embrace God’s plan we are escorted into following the god of this world’s plan. Satan’s plan is to steal, kill and destroy all and any good thing – including people, especially people.

But God is in Control
In 1994, Twila Paris wrote a song titled God Is In Control after obsessing about the world’s instability.

God spoke to Twila's heart. "He said, 'Just remember, people do what they will, but at the end of the day I'm the One with the ultimate authority. Remember that I am in control.' "

Oh, yeah. God is in control, Twila thought. The overused phrase had almost become a cliché. But as Twila reflected on the meaning of those four words, it hit her. We as humans sometimes choose to do terrible things. But the truth remains: He is in control.”

Thank you, Heavenly Father, for Your all consuming care for us and that sometimes we get to visibly see that care.

Thank you, Lord, for friends (like Great Britain) who look out for us at a time when people in other nations and even in our own, denigrate* our government, our help and our way-of-life.

Mighty God, please use this latest terrorist attempt to bring people to You and to help us to place our trust in You in a bigger way. Help us to believe and live like You are in control. Help us to live in a more selfless way in order to do Your will on Earth like it is being done in Heaven.

Finally, Merciful Saviour, bring sweet relief and the appropriate salvation to the family and friends who are left behind after terrorist attacks everywhere and specifically to those of 9/11.

Amen.

* I think there is a huge difference between denigrating, maligning and defaming America and openly discussing, in a polite helpful way, our “growth” areas.

Wahoo - It's Day 6 of Friendship Bread Starter

According to the Friendship Bread Starter Recipe I get to . . .

“Add 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, and 1 cup of milk. Squeeze bag several times.”

In the past I have not been very successful with taking care of my Starter. It would get too hot and die. It would get too cold and not grow. Or I’d forget all about it – especially when it was nestled in my sock drawer.

But so far so good and I have some Starter to share.

My sister declined taking possession of Starter because she was sure she’d fall into the “forgetting all about it” camp.

After explaining to Lorna the care and feeding of Starter she said, “It’s like taking care of a plant and I kill plants.” She also declined – for now.

J was willing to give it a go. After giving some Starter to J, she and hubby talked about what they’d do with Starter this week. They have plans to go to Redding. In the end, it was hoped that their upstairs neighbor would give Starter the necessary squeezes.

He Called Me Daughter Not By My Sin or Disease

The woman in Luke 8 had been bleeding for 12 years. Because of this bleeding, the people in her community were forbidden to touch her. That’s a long time to be ill and that's a long time to live without human touch. Luke 8:43-48

These past 12 years I’ve spent all my money on finding a cure for something incurable. I didn’t give up though! I couldn’t give up. Even though I was ceremonially unclean and forbidden to be in crowds, I just had to get to Jesus.

No one else could heal me.

“Jesus won’t heal you,” others told me. “He heals by touch and He won’t touch you.”

Maybe He could. Maybe He would. He’s had compassion on other unclean people.

Somehow I made my way through that swell of humanity and was able to purposefully touch the fringe of His cloak. When I did that! When I did that, the bleeding stopped immediately!

Jesus asked, “Who touched me? Power has gone out from me!”

His disciples chided Him saying that many people were crowding and pressing against Him.

But He knew. And I knew what had happened.

I was hoping I could go away unnoticed, but since I couldn’t, I fell to His feet. Right there in front of everyone, I told Him why I touched Him and how I was instantly healed. I was mortified and frightened and I couldn’t look at anyone. I wondered what the Master would do.

“Daughter,” Jesus said.

He called me daughter?! Maybe it’ll be okay that I purposefully touched Him in my unclean state.

Daughter? A term of endearment? All these years I have suffered rejection from my family and friends because of my unclean state. They said I must be sinning and that God wants nothing to do with me. And that’s why they stayed away from me too.

Daughter? This Master, this Healer cares about me? All these years I’ve been going to doctors who couldn’t help me. I was no-one. And now Jesus calls me daughter.

“Daughter,” He said, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”

Oh, I’ll go in peace all right. And in joy and thanksgiving. Thank you, Son of Man. Thank you for looking at me as a person and not as a sin or a disease. Thank you for looking at me as a daughter and healing me.

I’ll look at You as more than a Master . . . more than a Healer. To me you are my Salvation.

"Daughter," what touch from Jesus the Messiah do you earnestly need today? If you want to share your need, I will pray with you.

CNC: Updated and Fresh But Still Biblical

Oh, we've had an awesome time planning (these past few weeks) the fall happenings at church.

I don't have time now to go into it (on my way to a meeting and then work), but let me tell you, friendship starter, church cookbook and series on Community Matters are just the beginnings of building Community at Cordova Neighborhood Church!

This is an exciting time to be a part of our church.

Please continue to pray for wisdom, unity, and strength.

"Starter" Is One Ingredient In Building Community

Something's growing at CNC.

It’s easy to create.
It’s bubbling with life.
And it’s meant to be shared.

It’s Friendship Bread. Also known as Amish Friendship Bread and Herman bread.

According to Wikipedia, Amish Friendship Bread, “is the chain letter of the baking world [or like zucchini from summer gardens]. The idea is very simple: a friend gives you a cup of yeast culture (also known as "starter") and a copy of instructions. Following the instructions, you add sugar, flour and milk and it rises."

"Eventually, you end up with 4 cups of the starter. You use one to make bread, keep one to start a new cycle and give two to your friends. Each of your friends also gets a copy of the instructions for what to do with the yeast starter. The latter part makes it somewhat like a chain letter.”

The idea is simple: use some, keep some and give some away. A recipe like this can quickly get out-of-hand and that’s what Women’s Ministry is proposing. In fact, let’s see how out of hand we can get. And how quickly we can do it.

Pass it on
Do you think it’s possible for every woman of the church to receive starter? All those on the mailing list? Wouldn’t this be a fun way to connect with others? An unusual way to build community? Let’s see if we can pass it on to all the Family by the end of October.

“Hello, my name is Susan. It’s good to see you at church today. I’d like to give you a little something. It’s a Friendship muffin, (aha, you didn’t know you could make muffins with it, did you?), a bag of starter and a recipe to make your own muffins or loaf of bread.”

“When you've made your bread, you can give your friends a sample and the starter that made it! Then your friends can make their own and pass it along to their friends. This is why the bread is called "friendship bread".[1]

But wait, something else is growing at CNC.

It’s a cookbook. Women’s Ministry is collecting recipes for an all-church cookbook.

So while you’re passing out samples and starter, how about passing out reminders to submit recipes (need them by August 15) and reserve a copy of the cookbook. Hardcopy forms are on the Secret Sister bookshelf; an electronic form can be received by e-mailing cncwomensministry@yahoo.com.

Be sure to grow and pass on the starter you receive. Even better yet, why don’t you start your own chain? The recipe for the starter and bread is in a separate post. When you’ve passed it on, please let me know by commenting here or click on Cookbook and comment on the post titled – Friendship Bread - Pass It On.

Let’s see how long it does take us to pass it on to all the CNC community.

Maybe at CNC we could call it Community Bread. ‘Cuz that’s what we’re doing with our sharing – building community. That’s what we’re doing with our cookbook – building community. That’s what Pastor will be preaching on – building community.

Why? Because Community Matters in the short-haul, long-haul and in Eternity.

Friendship Bread Starter Recipe

Ingredients:

1 package active dry yeast
1 cup milk
1 cup flour
1 cup sugar

NOTE: DO NOT USE METAL BOWLS OR SPOONS AND DO NOT REFRIGERATE (at this stage).

Directions:

Dissolve yeast in small amount of warm water. Mix all ingredients together in ample size bowl or jar - it will grow. (I put mine in a gallon-size ziplock bag).

This is day 1 of the recipe, then the next day go to day 2 and so on.

o DAY 1 Receive fermented starter in ziplock bag. Do nothing! Put bag on counter.
o DAY 2 Squeeze bag several times.
o DAY 3 Squeeze bag several times.
o DAY 4 Squeeze bag several times.
o DAY 5 Squeeze bag several times.
o DAY 6 Add 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, and 1 cup of milk. Squeeze bag several times.
o DAY 7 Squeeze bag several times.
o DAY 8 Squeeze bag several times.
o DAY 9 Squeeze bag several times.
o DAY 10 In a large non-metallic bowl, combine batter with 1 cup milk, 1 cup flour and 1 cup sugar. Mix with wooden or plastic spoon. Take two one gallon ziplock bags and pour 1 cup of starter in each.

Give these two starters, with a copy of instructions, to CNC women.
Make a loaf of bread (or muffins) with one cup of the starter.
Keep one cup of starter so you can start the cycle over again.

13 MUST Do's For Community People at CNC

1. Kids, bring your stamps to church, August 13, for the final count. As of August 8th the girls were in the lead. Turn them in to Lynette or your Sunday School teacher.

2. PEP people have plans to attend lunch and a show at Garbeau’s on Sunday, August 13. If you have any questions, contact Myrna.

3. Submit your recipes (up to three) by Tuesday, August 15. Contact Marsha for forms or queries. You can email her cncwomensministry@yahoo.com.

4. Attention all YOUTH – your Thursday groups will return to Rudat Hall on August 17. Middle Schoolers meets at 6 pm and High Schoolers met at 7 pm. Of course Bryce is the one with the answers for these events.

5. Interested in Missions? Come to the next meeting held at CNC on August 20th at 7 pm. Let Jeff and Jessica know if you have any questions. You can reach them at the office 635-5592, x 15.

6. Sign up for Family Camp at Union Valley Reservoir on August 25-27. To save your spot call Mark W.

7. Couples Weekend to Remember Conference is happening on two dates in October: 13-15 and 20-22. Contact Andy and Christy for more information. If you can make this happen – DO! The time away, the encouragement and the biblical advice you’ll receive will enhance your relationship with each other.

9. Bring to church your old cell phones and used ink jet cartridges. Let the Women’s Ministry dispose of them for you. So far we’ve collected about 7 phones and 60 cartridges. Thank you for supporting us in this fundraiser.

10. Women’s Ministry is still taking names for those who are able to participate as meal volunteers. We are developing a list of people who can occasionally take a meal to a family/person in need. Let Reggie know of your interest. Email her at cncwomensministry@yahoo.com.

11. Find a small group to be a part of - as a leader or attendee. Both are needed. There’s a list of groups in the church office. Contact Susan for questions or “Yes, I’d love to be a small group leader.”

12. Pick up a revised church directory from the office. The phone numbers it contains are for your use. Invite some folks over for a BBQ, coffee break at La Bou, midnight bowling, or play date at a local park. Use the addresses to send a few encouragement, thank you or glad to meet you cards this week.

13. Do one thing this week to encourage one of our pastors or their wives. The church website (at the bottom) has some great ideas. I’ve included some of the links here , here and here for your convenience.

All Church Cookbook is Simmering On the Stove

“First you make a roux” is the way many Cajun and Creole one-pot main dishes start. And there is no further explanation of making a roux. Making roux and all the dishes that start with one is a hand-me-down tradition.

Passing down recipes from one generation to the next is a hand-me down tradition that occurs in all cultures. This ritual binds one family member to the next. It forms a connection; links the past to the present and then to the future.

Community is formed. And community matters.

This is one reason why Women’s Ministry is putting together an all church cookbook. We are collecting more than instructional how-to’s on making certain foods. So there are three more reasons we are putting together this ccokbook.

We are collecting memories: “This pork chop casserole was one my grandma always made when we visited because my dad thoroughly enjoyed eating it. I, however, was fed up and once asked, “Grandma, is this all you know how to cook?”

We are remembering those who have passed on: “While working in the nursery one morning, Betty and I started talking about recipes using persimmons. She told me that every Christmas she sent persimmon cookies to her family because it was the most requested one. Betty brought in the recipe for me to try and I loved it... The best part is having the handwritten recipe card from her to cherish.”

We are sharing the best recipes from each family: “Sometimes when I look at a new cookbook, I’m not sure what will turn out well. But when I look at recipes in a cookbook like this, I know my kids will eat it.”

Please submit all recipes by August 15, 2006. We want to have the books back in time to buy as Christmas gifts.

The other day a friend and I were talking about creating a web space for older people. We jokingly called it Old Space. We dreamed of the millions we'd make. Of the perfume we'd develop and sell. ( A cross between Old Spice and My Space)

Well someone else gets to have the millions.

On Monday, July 31, 2006, Eons.com was launched. "Eons is a company inspiring a generation of boomers and elders to live the biggest life possible. Set goals, celebrate life, get things done, learn, connect with other people 50+."

So do you think Eons will get many post-ers from younger folks like My Space has older post-ers?

I have two more weeks at my temp job. Working at night always throws my schedule off because it takes me so long to wind down. Since I am a natural night owl it seems like that part of my brain takes over and before I know it - it's way late.

How has your work week been?

After these two weeks are over, I'll concentrate working at church and doing school work. I look forward to putting my best energy towards those endeavors. I look forward to updating my ministries at church. And I look forward to getting to know ladies at CNC. We have a great group and it is a joy learning from/having fun with them. I hope you are experiencing the same kind of relationships.

Oh, and keeping a current blog is also something I am looking forward to! Blogging is my new favorite hobby. Until two weeks I didn't know much about it. But now I am hooked.

I woke up with a few thoughts this morning.

The first one is make sure I maintain a balanced schedule. I have so many things I want to do, but then I get in overwhelmed mode. And nobody is happy then.

The second thought is I Peter 2: 9-10. I know I posted it on Sunday, but I'm going to repost it. Think about what the words say and what they really mean. Share what God has done for you.

But you are the ones chosen by God,
chosen for the high calling of priestly work,
chosen to be a holy people,
God's instruments to do His work
and speak out for Him,
to tell others of the night-and-day difference He made for you—
from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted.
I Peter 2: 9-10 The Message

Wow - Jesus really did/does make a night and day difference for me.
I was nothing and rejected. There were people in my life that made sure I knew that and some still try to do that.

BUT. . .

God got involved.
Now, I am something. I am accepted - for ALL time.
